Evidence-based care for every child in Ireland

Evidence-based care at Jigsaw mental health charity

Jigsaw is the only primary care youth mental health service provider in Ireland for young people aged 12-25. They offer both online and in person support and advice. They give families, schools, and those who support young people’s mental health ways to cope and the skills to be there for young people.

The challenge

A review of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Ireland published by the Mental Health Commission, found that services could not “currently provide an assurance to all parents or guardians in all parts of Ireland that their children have access to a safe, effective and evidenced-based mental health service”. The majority of CAMHS were still paper-based, and as of 2023 Ireland implemented their first digital health strategy.

Jigsaw was looking for a system to support their ambitious programme of transformation in how they deliver services. Additionally, they wanted to collect better information on the effectiveness of those services. Also, they wanted to be able to inform the team where to concentrate their efforts to generate the greatest impact to meet their mission of supporting young people.

The solution

Jigsaw realised they needed a new system for the next stage of their journey, one that would be able to grow with them as their service expanded. Staff and young people were involved in the implementation of iaptus, providing feedback and influencing decisions. Therefore, iaptus allowed Jigsaw to create user-friendly points of access for young people, improved the efficiency of scheduling appointments, and integrated a range of functions, with everything kept in the secure environment of the system. Importantly, access to data improved, ensuring the ability to make evidence informed decisions.

Since implementation, iaptus supports Jigsaw with:

  • Automation of processes (e.g SMS reminders, outcome measurement, drafting of letters)
  • More flexibility in relation to system changes (e.g altering care pathways, editing data fields/drop-down lists)
  • Development of new therapeutic models (single-session therapy, group therapy)
  • Accessibility for young people (e.g online self-referral, online appointment booking, remote video sessions)
  • Improvements in data availability, analytics and insights as well as the governance of data
