Delivering MHSTs in partnership between NHS Trusts and VCSEs

Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership (AWP) NHS Trust works closely with voluntary sector partner Off the Record Bristol to offer Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) providing evidence-based interventions in educational settings for children aged 5 to 18 years old.

The well-established relationship has provided a strong foundation for the joint creation of MHSTs in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG). The MHSTs offer mental health support to children, families and the whole school in more than 150 schools and colleges in the area.

The challenge

The BNSSG MHST providers needed to be able to support practitioners to work securely across health and educational settings and be able to connect with CAMHS colleagues to ensure continuity of care where children and young people need specialist mental health support. The whole team, with staff co-located, needed to manage processes and records in line with NHS standards.

The solution

iaptus was already established and in use in AWP NHS Trust’s CAMHS teams and so it was a natural choice for the MHST programme

Having all team members from AWP NHS Trust and Off the Record Bristol using iaptus means that they can work to the same processes and offer continuity of care across CAMHS and wider health and education services.

Since the adoption of iaptus:

  • The senior leadership team uses data held in iaptus to explore current case numbers, access numbers and capacity, supporting future planning.
  • The team can ensure referrals are moved through the care pathway in an efficient way, in line with their KPI for a 28 day referral to appointment cycle.
  • Recording paired outcomes measures in iaptus enables the teams to share data on the effectiveness of MHST support.
  • Functions in iaptus support time efficiency of practitioners, such as pre-populated letter templates.
  • Practitioners use iaptus to explore data on under-representation of young people in services, supporting anti-oppressive practice and promoting equality of access to care.
  • A monthly audit of records ensures minimum recording standards are met and the use of iaptus is maximised.
Data from iaptus is used by both organisations to monitor KPIs – this objective information is important for the partners to hold each other accountable and thrive.
